Reminder to comment on Jan Smuts and Viking Way road widening
09 June 2025
The City of Cape Town would like to remind members of the public and interested groups to submit comments, recommendations or input on the road-widening proposal for Jan Smuts Drive and Viking Way. Both primary arterial routes connect Pinelands, Thornton and Maitland with the N2 freeway. The project aims to convert both single carriageway portions of road to dual carriageways that will accommodate all modes of transport. The comment period has been extended until Friday, 20 June 2025.
‘The City’s aim is to keep Cape Town moving and to deliver a sustainable transport system that is integrated, efficient and provides safe and affordable travel options for all. The widening of Jan Smuts Drive and Viking Way will ease traffic congestion and form part of the City’s Travel Demand and Congestion Relief Programme. It is important that members of the public comment on this proposal. We will also be hosting information days to ensure that affected residents are able to raise their concerns and provide feedback,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
The work to be done on Jan Smuts entails:
• Road-widening of Jan Smuts Drive from the N2 Freeway to Sunrise Circle
• A dual carriageway between the N2 and Viking Way Interchange
• Intersection optimisation and pedestrian and cycling facilities along the entire route.
The work to be done in Viking Way entails:
• Road-widening of Viking Way from Jan Smuts Drive to Jakes Gerwel Interchange
• A dual carriageway between Odin Drive and Sipres Avenue.
• Upgrade of the adjacent intersections (Odin Drive and Sipres Avenue intersections) to Gunner’s Circle, with provision for all active mobility (non-motorised transport) infrastructure along the entire route.
